Barbara Bowers Makes Nora Commons a Community

Nora Commons on the Monon is a place where people meet and friendships are made.

On any given day you can find a group of 5-10 residents of different ages and backgrounds talking and sharing stories in the café.  This particular group of residents has made an unofficial tradition to order food from “Jordan’s Fish and Chicken” on Friday afternoons.

This past Friday was a little different.  Nora Commons resident Barbara Bowers had planned to purchase with her own money multiple pans of chicken and Fish, to share with her friends. She decorated the tables and set up the bountiful buffet.  I asked her what the occasion was, and she said, “I want to give back to my friends at Nora for their friendship”  As I walked away I heard her giving a speech to her group of friends, thanking them for their laughter and stories that happen on a daily basis.

It’s a great feeling to know that not only are we providing wonderful affordable housing for seniors citizens, but we are helping them build friendships and creating a true community.
